Regiopolis Notre Dame Catholic High School (RND) netted over four villages, which will protect 1,200 people from malaria. Supported by the “Regi Helps Universal Missions” (RHUM) group, and Pastoral Director, Mary Elaine Carty, students Sara Lefebvre, Gabby Holle, Kelsey Tyerman, Cassy Santoni, Mady McDonald, Erin Brennan, and others sold beaded jewelry during lunch hours, as part of the “Beading Up Malaria” initiative. “It was easy to do. Everyone loved the necklaces and bracelets.” said Sara Lefebvre. Sara, who is a member of the upcoming Voluntour team to Uganda, will participate in bed net distributions made possible by the funds raised. Students at Bayridge Secondary School (BSS), led by Brenda Scarlett’s World Issues class, Kingston, ON, are true “Champions for Children” in the fight against malaria. BSS raised over $2,000 selling beautiful beaded jewelry made by Ugandan women. Not only did the students help net four villages to protect families from malaria, but they also supported employment for the “beaders” and their families. Great work, Bayridge! Thanks so much.

Malaria Champion presented Crystal Award at World Economic Forum in Davos

Roll Back Malaria Ambassador, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, was presented the Crystal Award during the opening session at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The award is given to artists who use their talents to improve the state of the world. “Voluntour” Team Prepares for Feb 2012 Departure

Departing February 9th, 2012, volunteers from across Canada will travel to Uganda for an experience that will change their lives, and positively impact the lives of Ugandans. Canadian citizens, ranging from ages 16 to 68, with a varied set of skills, and a common passion and determination to make a difference, will participate in the malaria prevention and control program offered through Buy-a-Net Canada and Uganda. “I am so excited to be going,” said Joanne Douglas, member of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada. “It’s an opportunity of a lifetime.” Led by Debra Lefebve, the group will be in Uganda until the end of February. The team will join the Ugandan community based information and education program aimed at protecting primarily women and children from malaria, and will also participate in the distribution of bed nets and program evaluation initiatives. In addition, the group will meet Ugandan “beaders”, the women who create the jewelry available through Buy-a-Net’s unique “Beading Up Malaria” initiative. Buy-a-Net Participates in ALCDSB Community Faith Day

Buy-a-Net was very pleased to participate in the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board Community Faith Day, October 24th, in Belleville, ON. Approximately 1800 staff were in attendance, and representatives of Buy-a-Net were very happy to share current projects with interested participants. With the message, “malaria causes poverty, and poverty causes malaria” the powerful impact of the “Beading Up Malaria” initiative on poverty and disease was featured. Algonquin & Lakeshore School Board staff learned that sustainable employment, poverty reduction and disease prevention and treatment in Uganda are tangible, achievable and positive outcomes of the “Beading Up Malaria” initiative.

Coppens Academy helps end poverty and malaria

Students at Coppens Academy, Kingston, ON, played the “bed net” game and had a lot of fun while learning about malaria and its devastating impact on children in Africa. Coppens students made bracelets with beads from Uganda, and gave them to their moms for Mother’s Day. Wonderful!

Beading Up Malaria a success at Investors Group

Stephanie C., employee of Investors Group, led a very successful campaign at the workplace and with friends. Loose beads and beaded jewelry made by Ugandan women from recycled paper were for sale as the fundraiser. The response was wonderful! Thank you, Stephanie and all who bought these incredible pieces of art. By doing so, you have directly tackled disease and poverty in Kawempe District, Uganda. Beads save lives, one village at a time.

York University Teams up with Buy-A-Net

Nafeesa F. tells us, “As proud students of York University, the Nursing Students Association at York (NSAY) decided to team up with Buy-A-Net to raise money and help empower mothers and children in Uganda…We started off by ordering a shipment of necklaces (small and long) and bracelets, and with a booth, promoted our cause among students and faculty members. The bracelets were a huge hit, especially when students found out that it was made from recycled paper! Every bead is made with such patience and beautiful intricacy that every bracelet and/or necklace definitely had a story to tell, which is what was written on our posters that were posted all over the campus. The fundraiser was a huge success, we raised a grand total of $1,186.34 in only TWO days! We came together (students and faculty of York U) to support a great cause such as this one. Thank you all who were part of this process! We appreciate it!” Thank you to NSAY (especially Nafeesa F.) and all at York U. You have made a real difference in saving lives from disease and poverty in Kawempe District, Uganda!

With thanks to teacher, Brenda Scarlett, staff and and students of Bayridge Secondary School, Kingston, ON, over $1,000 was raised through the “Beading Up Malaria” initiative. Beautiful bracelets handmade by Ugandan women out of recycled paper were purchased as gifts by the staff and students. “It’s a privilege to promote and support such an amazing organization,” said Ms. Scarlett. Canadian Nursing Students Embrace Buy-A-Net

In front of nearly 1,000 delegates at the Canadian Nursing Students Association National Conference, Debra Lefebvre shared Buy-A-Net’s successful community program of bringing relief and prevention of disease to needy mothers and their children in Uganda. “On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am extremely pleased that Cdn nursing students continue to endorse and support this great campaign. With the expansion of our program to include other leading killers of mothers and children in Uganda, we have alot of work before us.”
