Award Winning Partner Healthy Child Uganda Saves Lives with Buy-A-Net: Education Critical to Success

Buy-A-Net partnership with Healthy Child Uganda (www.healthychilduganda.org/) is saving lives through education, community empowerment, and bed nets. Buy-A-Net provided 13,000 bed nets to the project in Southwestern Uganda. “We have seen some very preliminary results for our recent follow up survey data analysis and our most significant indicator change was with bed nets. For households where a bed net was seen hanging and the youngest child under 2 was reported to be the one who slept under the net the previous night the results were 37.3% (up from 1.4% in 2006). This also increased in our control areas (indicating other distribution programs or net purchases) but not as significantly (25.6%).
40% of homes (in both control and intervention areas combined) had bed nets hanging (observed) versus 14% in 2006.
About 10% with a net hanging in 2006 reported that the youngest child slept under the net in 2006, but this increased to about 85% of homes with a net hanging in 2009; education about who should sleep under the net has had great impact!” reported Project Coordinator Erin Kiley and Canadian Director, Jenn Brenner. For the second time, Isaac and Noah of Ottawa, raised funds for bed nets. As explained by Dad, Chris, “My great boys both play soccer. When Noah (12) won an official World Cup (‘Jabulani’) soccer ball in a raffle, he decided to raffle it off to raise funds for malaria prevention in Africa. They sold tickets for the raffle and also raised money at a large community event to watch the World Cup Final. As Buy-A-Net has the most cost effective nets being used, they asked the funds be donated to Buy-A-Net” (once again). Thank you for your onoing support, hard work and generosity, Isaac and Noah! The boys (with a little help from Dad) raised $518 for bed nets!
