July 11, 2010 – Cornwall, Ontario Members of the Catholic Women’s League bring peace and hope to families in Uganda. Debra Lefebvre, Executive Director, Buy-A-Net, arrived in Cornwall, Ontario to participate in the Catholic Women’s League of Canada 63rd Annual Ontario Provincial Convention at the Nav Canada Training and Conference Centre from July 11 th to 14th. The Convention will bring over 300 delegates from 13 dioceses from across Ontario. In honour of the event, Mayor Bob Kilger has proclaimed July 10th to 16th as “Catholic Women’s League” week in the city. The Most Reverend Archbishop Brendan O’Brien will be in attendance. As “Women of Peace and Hope”, the Catholic Women’s League has provided 4,000 bed nets to the Lugazi Parish, Uganda, and thousands more to the District of Kawempe, Uganda, as well as anti-malaria medication to children.

Kingston: The Buy-A-Net Malaria Prevention Group takes over Confederation Basin to mark World Malaria Day, on Sunday, April 25th, with a “Sleep out” and a “Rock-Out” to commemorate this important day of global awareness.
April 25, 2010 is a day of unified commemoration of the global effort to provide effective control of malaria around the world. World Malaria Day is an opportunity for malaria-free countries to learn about the devastating consequences of the disease.
This year, communities around the world are “Sleeping Out to End Malaria”. The Kingston event runs from 1:00 – 8:00 pm. Buy-A-Net encourages citizens of all ages to attend this day to demonstrate both their determination and optimism that the battle against Malaria can be won.
A full day’s program of varied musical entertainment featuring Andrea Gauster, Beautiful Inferno, Ottawa-based Chasing Curiosity, Earth Wind and Haggis, Singer song-writer Jim Tidman , and to close the show Spread the Secret Participants will also be treated to the performance, “A Malaria Story” by the Kingston based, youth theatre company, The Not So Amateur Amateurs. Face painting will be available for the younger supporters.
Buy-A-Net will also be encouraging Kingstonians to “Bead Up Malaria”. Made possible through a recent partnership with “Bead For Life”, one-of-a-kind handmade beads will be on sale with all proceeds going to the Buy-A-Net Malaria Prevention Group. Thirty beads will be sold for $7 – the price of one bed net.
Bead For Life (beadforlife.org) is an organization that reduces extreme poverty by creating bridges of understanding between impoverished Africans and concerned world citizens. Ugandan women turn colorful recycled paper into beautiful beads, which are, in turn, sold around the world. The beads thus become income, food, medicine, school fees and hope.
Launched in 2004, Buy-A-Net is Canada’s first volunteer-driven, charitable organization that seeks to prevent deaths from Malaria in Africa one country at a time. The nation of Uganda was chosen as the first target country of the campaign, whose slogan “7 Bucks, Buy-A-Net, Save a life” provides advocacy and awareness about malaria as well as raises much-needed funds for the procurement of long-lasting, insecticide treated bed nets and anti-malaria medicine. In partnership with community-based groups, the nets are distributed free of charge, one village at a time. Children and pregnant women in Africa are most vulnerable to malaria. Malaria takes a child’s life every 30 seconds, and 50 Million pregnant women are at risk of malaria resulting in poor health, and maternal and neonatal death.

Stop malaria to save lives: Princess
OTTAWA – An international group of malaria experts is calling on G8 leaders to make the disease part of its plan to boost maternal and child health.
Astrid, Princess of Belgium, told a meeting of Canadian parliamentarians and anti-malaria organizations it’s critical to get the message across that malaria is completely preventable.
“Malaria control is central to improving the health and well-being of populations in endemic countries,” she said Friday in Ottawa.
Malaria kills one million African children every year. Pregnant women are four times more likely to catch malaria, which leads to severe maternal anemia, premature births and low birth weight. But it’s easy to prevent malaria with insecticide-treated bed nets, and handing out free nets is a way to get women into clinics for prenatal care, said Debra Lefebvre of Buy-A-Net, a Canadian organization that raises money to distribute free nets.
Awa Marie Coll-Seck, executive director of Roll Back Malaria, says she’s worried the priorities of the G8 change every year, but malaria should be a consistent target.
“Malaria is on the development agenda and I am happy to see you all raising the issue at the G8,” Coll-Seck said. “Every priority, malaria is there.”

James Brown, Chairperson, receives Outstanding Philanthropist of the Year Award

At the 5th Annual National Philanthropy Day awards ceremony held in Kingston, Ontario, James Brown, Chairperson, Buy-A-Net, received the Outstanding Philanthropist of the Year award. James was recognized for his leadership, inspiration and engagement of others with his belief that our global community is stronger if we can work together when supporting important charitable initiatives.
“We are delighted that James is the Chair of our Board,” said Debra Lefebvre. “James has made a personal commitment to save lives from malaria. He traveled to Uganda in 2008 and witnessed first hand the devastation caused to families by this killer disease. He generously gives his energy and resources to make malaria history. He is the voice of those who don’t have one. He is a model philanthropist.”
Hosted by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, which has 30,000 members worldwide, the luncheon was well attended by local and regional delegates, including Mr. Rob Matheson, Kingston City Councillor, and Mr. John Gerretsen, MPP, Kingston and the Islands, Ontario, Canada.
Univ of North Carolina reports $6 bed net saves babies and is an “extremely cost-effective intervention”
“Giving insecticide-treated bed nets to nearly 18,000 mothers at prenatal clinics in the Democratic Republic of Congo prevented an estimated 414 infant deaths from malaria, a study by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill researchers concludes.
The bed nets cost about $6 each. … the intervention prevented an estimated 587 low birth weight deliveries, which in turn reduced long-term disability.
“This is an extremely cost-effective intervention,” said Sylvia Becker-Dreps, M.D., M.P.H., assistant professor of family medicine in the UNC School of Medicine and lead author of the study, which is published in the September 2009 issue of the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.”

Footballers are teaming up with governments, companies and international health campaigners to push for action against malaria ahead of next year’s World Cup finals in South Africa.
The “United Against Malaria” campaign, which will start next month and run until the end of the World Cup, has won the backing of singer Bono, actress Ashley Judd and philanthropist Melinda Gates, wife of Microsoft founder Bill.
