City of Kingston a leader in the Fight Against Malaria: Mayor Harvey Rosen and Buy-A-Net Malaria Prevention Group to meet Her Royal Highness Princess Astrid of Belgium

Kingston, Ontario – April 14, 2010 Debra Lefebvre, Executive Director, Buy-A-Net Malaria Prevention Group, together with Mayor Harvey Rosen, will meet with HRH Princess Astrid of Belgium, Special Representative, Roll Back Malaria (RBM) Partnership, Prof. Awa Marie Coll-Seck, RBM Executive Director, and Rob Newman, Director, World Health Organization, Global Malaria Program, on Friday, April 16th, 2010, in Room 160S, Centre Block, Parliament Hill, at 9:00 a.m.
Hosted by Senator Mobina Jaffer and Mr. Patrick Brown, M.P., (Barrie), Vice-Chairs, All-Party Parliamentary Malaria Caucus, together with Senator Hugh Segal and other members of the Malaria Caucus, Her Royal Highness Princess Astrid of Belgium, will raise awareness about malaria and call for an increased action in the fight against this preventable, treatable disease that continues to take the lives of nearly one million people a year.

“There is hope in stopping this killer disease that puts 50 million pregnant women at risk each year, and takes a child’s life every 30 seconds. The City of Kingston is the first city to recognize World Malaria Day in Canada and as such, is a leader on the world stage in the fight against malaria. We have made great” said Debra Lefebvre.
As part of HRH’s outreach tour to highlight World Malaria Day, April 25, 2010, and recognizing Canada as a leader in the fight against malaria and the host of the G8, Princess Astrid will share the progress being made in malaria control today, as well as the challenges ahead.
